Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art commission: Belonging(s)

Lipman 2.jpeg

Belonging(s), a sculpture of a travel trunk made from glass, ceramic, gold, salt, and gun powder, investigates issues of immigration, assimilation, and agency, concepts that are rooted in the founding of the United States and are redefined anew by each generation. The sculpture responds to a portrait of Abigaill Levy Franks by Gerardus Duyckinck I. The trunk holds objects which represent aspects of Levy Frank’s life that continue to shape the collective narrative.

Crystal Bridges invited Lipman to create a commissioned work of art in conjunction with Crafting America, a new exhibition that celebrates the skill and individuality of craft within the broad context of American art.
